Top scientists and industry experts from over 28 countries will attend…

Top scientists and industry experts from over 28 countries will attend the third international Greenhouse Gases and Animal Agriculture Conference http://www.confer.co.nz/ggaa2007/index.html at the Hotel Grand Chancellor in Christchurch from November 26-29.

Hosted by government, industry and scientific agencies in New Zealand and Australia the theme for GGAA07 is: “developing livestock systems for greenhouse and productivity benefits”. This is the third GGAA conference earlier ones having been held in Switzerland in 2005 and Japan in 2001.

The conference will be opened by GGAA President Professor J. Takahashi and will feature opening addresses from the Minister for Climate Change David Parker and David Ugalde from the Australian Greenhouse Office.

This year’s programme offers papers from acclaimed international researchers working in the field of agricultural greenhouse gas mitigation in New Zealand, Australia, the Netherlands, Canada, Switzerland, USA, Germany, Japan, Malaysia, India and Brazil.

The conference will be followed on Friday November 30 by a workshop for farm consultants and others working in the field of on-farm education. This will focus on how best to communicate practical messages arising from the conference to farmers.

The New Zealand Government, in partnership with the Pastoral Greenhouse gas Research Consortium, has invested over $14m in scientific programmes aimed at reducing agricultural greenhouse gases since 2002.

New Zealand Conference Convenor Harry Clark says the work scientists are currently doing is vital for both industry and Government since both need to find cost-effective greenhouse gas mitigation outcomes as quickly as possible.

The conference is principally sponsored by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, the Australian Greenhouse Office, the Ministry for the Environment, AgResearch and the Pastoral Greenhouse Gas Research Consortium

Pax Christi will be holding its annual assembly at St Columba‚s…

Pax Christi will be holding its annual assembly at St Columba‚s Centre, 40 Vermont St, Ponsonby, Auckland on Friday 23 and Saturday 24 November 2007.

The Friday programme begins with a keynote address by Professor Joe Camilleri of the Centre for Dialogue, Latrobe University, Melbourne, titled Å’From the Middle East to Asia Pacific: Arc of Conflict or Dialogue of Cultures and Religions.

Saturday‚s programme will look at different aspects of the relationship between New Zealand and Pacific Islands, some unresolved conflicts in the region and hopefully, some paths towards resolutions of those conflicts by peaceful means. Contributions to the discussion will include Pacific Island and New Zealand speakers with experience in justice and peace work in the region. There will also be plenty of time for discussion on a wide range of topics.

We offer a warm invitation to anyone who would be interested in this gathering. Morning and afternoon tea will be provided but we would be grateful for a plate of finger food, or a contribution towards the costs of the venue and meals.

The programme runs on Friday 23 November: 6pm (shared meal), 7pm prayer and welcome, 7.30pm to 9.30pm keynote address; and Saturday 24 November from 9.15am to 4.30pm.

We hope you can join us for this important review of peace needs in the Asia-Pacific region. For more information, contact Pax Christi email paxnz@xtra.co.nz

A forthcoming Institute of Policy Studies publication by Nicola White The…

A forthcoming Institute of Policy Studies publication by Nicola White

The New Zealand Official Information Act 1982 is frequently hailed as one of this country’s most significant constitutional reforms. It is praised as world-leading in its refusal to contemplate that any category of government information might be completely immune from the prospect of public disclosure.

But for those who work with the Act, either as seekers of information or as officials responding to requests, it is not an unqualified good – the working reality of the Act can be frustrating and time-consuming, just as often as it is enlightening.
This book follows a two-year research project into the day-to-day operation of the Act. It examines the history of the Act’s passage and subsequent development and reports the candid views of (anonymised) officials, politicians, academics, political advisers and ‘regular seekers’ of OfficialInformation.

The result is a ‘free and frank’ picture of the operation of administrative and political processes around Official Information. It carries a sobering message about how those process, if not well-managed, can erode trust in government across time.

But the picture is not all bleak. The book concludes with proposals for change designed to build on the very real strengths of the system, to help itcope with the challenges of modern politics and the information age.

Nicola White has had nearly 20 years of close involvement with the theory and practice of the Official Information Act as a public sector lawyer and policy adviser. This research was carried out whilst she was a Senior Research Fellow at the Institute of Policy Studies in Victoria University’s School of Government (2004-6).

UNIFEM New Zealand is, for the fourth year, co-ordinating a White…

UNIFEM New Zealand is, for the fourth year, co-ordinating a White Ribbon Campaign to mark the U.N. International Day for Elimination of Violence Against Women (IDEVAW).

In 2004 an initial campaign was organised and over 13,000 white ribbons were distributed to diverse organisations, schools, companies and government departments throughout the country. Since then more and more ribbons are being worn each year. There has been widespread success and enthusiastic support generated for this campaign by many groups and individuals. The Families Commission collaboration is invaluable as it widens, supports and strengthen this “Stop Violence” initiative further in 2007.

The major objective is to heighten awareness and to educate towards a commitment to never condone violence and abuse in our society.

UNIFEM invites your participation again in White Ribbon Day and warmly welcome new supporters.

Ribbons will be assembled ready to send out mid October, for more info see www.unifem.org/idevaw.htm
