Ten interviews and two features have been combined to provide a professional and balanced way of learning more about climate change, or engaging your church or small group on the subject.

The interviews came from the Climate Change and Governance Conference held at Te Papa Tongarewa, Wellington, March 2006. This conference took place at a time of mounting international concern over the speed and magnitude of global climate change and its likely economic social and environmental impacts. The conference explored the nature of the potential impacts and the options for accelerated action by governments, business and the wider community. This DVD records some of the key messages and concerns voiced at the conference.

An holistic and Kiwi Christian Spirituality,
Written by Mike Coleman

"The koru is used as the symbol. The centre of the koru is the heart of God. From this place, life flows in all its forms. All creation came from this heart that is love.

"In Jesus we are fully reunited with the heart of God. Our life is centred in God's heart - out life in God. We life together as the body of Christ. We life this life for those around us - our life for others. As we have been created out of love and reconciled out of love, we give this love to those around us.

This is a very practical, prayer based resource for fostering Koru Christianity.

We exist as a ministry of the church, to develop our mission and nurture justice spirituality. Many of you will have seen the kinds of resources we produce - from Just Living, and the 2007 Calendar "Wish you were here", to the recent MDG praying cards.

Projects for this year include:

Hikoi Retreats around the province
Justice DVD based educational and liturgical resource for churches and groups with a particular focus on election year
The South Pacific Journal of Public Theology
JUST Giving - a website for micromission
...and many more.

Please consider making a donation, and encourage others to do the same. It's an invaluable way of enhancing our work as a church.

Just dream with us...

If you and members of your churches gave just ten dollars a year to the Commission's work of justice mission development, we would be able to do so much more to encourage and develop our mission for living justly, and build up local initiatives. Imagine, that's less than the cost of a few of cups of coffee.

If you would like to know more about these projects, or other aspects of our work, please get in touch.

The suggested donation is ten dollars. Feel free to change that up or down.

Why is there so much violence in the Middle East?

Ever wondered why there is so much violence in the Middle East? Or who, precisely, are the Palestinians? What are the occupied territories? What does Israel want? What is the international response to the conflict?

With straightforward language Phyllis Bennis, long-time analyst of the region, answers basic questions such as these about Israel and Israelis, Palestine and Palestinians, the US and the Middle East, Zionism and anti-Semitism; about complex issues ranging from the Oslo peace process to the election of Hamas. Her answers point the way toward a comprehensive understanding of the longstanding Palestinian/Israeli conflict.

Jo Wilding’s Diary from Iraq

Taking a circus to the real Iraq.

As a human rights observer, Jo Wilding, a young solidarity activist, witnessed and recorded some of the worst atrocities committed against ordinary civilians during the Iraq war and occupation. As the occupation began, she joined a group of performers to put on circus shows in squatter camps, hospitals, schools and orphanages.

Jo Wilding’s daily accounts have an immediacy and accuracy that bring the scenes sharply into focus. From the shocking and painful stories of the siege of Falluja to the crowds of mesmerised children given some respite from horror and uncertainty by the clowns, every episode vividly evokes what day to day life in Iraq is really like.

Fever, the Panama Canal, poetry and Roman emperors.... All are linked by the mosquito, the pesky night time bomber that buzzes its way into everyone’s life. For some its bite brings deadly disease, for others it is a work of art. Certainly it is the ultimate survivor; all attempts to wipe it out have failed, and its 2,500 species have invaded not only bodies, but cultures too.

Children Just Like Me

Children around the world

Produced in association with UNICEF (the United Nations Children's Fund, which receives a royalty from each sale) this superb book gives a remarkable insight into the hopes and lives of children from 30 different parts of the world, through the eyes of a photographer and teacher who travelled for two years to meet the children. Fascinating in detail and beautifully graphic. Extraordinary photographs bring to life the children's families and homes, their clothes and food, their friends and favourite games, and other aspects of their daily lives.

The children live in places as diverse as New York, Mongolia, and the Amazon Basin. There are children from both industrialised and developing nations, including children from tribal cultures. Their environments include mountains, deserts, rainforests, plains, and polar regions. Most live in extended or nuclear families, but Suchart, a novice monk, live in a monastery, and Tedasse, an Ethiopian boy lives in an orphanage. Children everywhere will enjoy reading about the lives of these children who share their world...

"I'd love to travel into space because I want to see if there are any creatures on other planets." - Ji-Koo, South Korea

"I like living by the river - I want to live here for the rest of my life. I love the forest, and it makes me sad when people chop down the trees." - Celina, Brazil

The World Came to my Place Today

The world really does come to visit George when his Grandpa arrives, with a globe, to look after him and his sister for the day. Grandpa explains how everything from the cereal they eat for breakfast and the chocolate bars they love, to the rubber in their bicycle tyres and wood in their toys, come from plants all over the world.

The lively, simple text follows George’s day as he discovers the wonder of plants and how they affect his daily life. With eye-catching, quirky illustrations coupled with photographs of the original grasses, fruits and plants on the right hand side, this highly original and entertaining book follows the ethos of the Eden Project by increasing awareness in children of the natural world around them.

An alternative guide to the countries of the world

The World Guide provides you with a refreshingly different perspective on the countries of the world. Drawing on United Nations and other mainstream data, it includes all the facts, history, political and economic analysis you would find in a conventional reference work, but it also offers information on issues central to the lives of people in Africa, Asia, the Middle East, Latin America and the Caribbean.

This new, 11th edition of this highly respected resource gives you up-to-date information plus a complete history of every single country, including small island states such as Aruba and Nauru, disputed states like Palestine and West Papua, and newly independent states such as Montenegro.

The World Guide is written and produced by the Third World Institute in Uruguay, using research from across the countries of the South. As a world reference, it is unique in providing a view of the world ‘from the South’.

The No-Nonsense Guide to Conflict and Peace

The 20th century was the most bloody in history as sophisticated weaponry killed millions of people. And already conflict in the new century has taken a heavy toll. In today’s world most wars are within countries rather than between states. Often, it is civilians that suffer most, especially women and children.

This invaluable No-Nonsense Guide is excellent for students, peace groups and activists. With tables, maps, case studies and quotes, it looks at how conflict escalates and ways it can be prevented. It examines the changing types of war, including the ‘War on Terror’ and ethnic conflict such as in Rwanda; the role of diplomacy and the UN, and what steps ordinary people are taking to re-build communities. It also offers ideas and inspiration for creating lasting peace.

The No-Nonsense Guide to Human Rights

The No-Nonsense Guide to Human Rights is the perfect starting point for anyone wanting to get into human rights, with plenty to interest the seasoned activist.

Should rights be sacrificed in the fight against terrorism? Can torturers perform a public service? Should human rights take precedence over the environment? What good are rights for famine victims, or tsunami survivors? What do rights have to say about the misery and injustice caused by corporations? What about rights violated in the home? Do refugees have rights? Why should Donald Rumsfeld consult his lawyers before holidaying abroad? Is a just peace possible? Or a just war? Moreover, how can rights be made real?

The No-Nonsense Guide to Tourism

We all like to take a break, relax on a beach or explore somewhere new. And we assume tourism economically benefits the host too. But this is often not the case - in the global south over 50 percent of a tourist's spending will leave the country in which it is spent. And what about the environmental impact of jetting off to exotic destinations?

In this No-Nonsense Guide, Pamela Nowicka explores the third biggest industry in the world (after oil and narcotics). Taking the reader on a trip through the early days of travel, up to the first package tours and today's mass tourism, she argues that we in the West could help more by travelling less and being more discerning when we do travel. This compelling and fascinating book will show you the hidden impacts of tourism.

The No-Nonsense Guide to Climate Change

Hurricanes, glacier melt, unstable seasons - instances of extreme weather are more and more frequent. And there is growing awareness of the disproportionate effect climate change will have on poorer countries in the South.

Each new scientific report on climate change makes increasingly alarming predictions about global warming. The threat is impossible to ignore. Or is it? Most governments have responded slowly, if at all, betraying an attitude of denial and a reluctance to instigate changes.

Fully revised and updated, this No-Nonsense Guide looks at the latest findings, explores the options and explains why carbon emissions trading and nuclear power are not the answer. It calls for measures to clean up our act, cut energy use, and improve energy efficiency.

The No-Nonsense Guide to Islam

For many non-Muslims, the terrorist attacks of 11 September 2001 in the US deepened an association of Islam with violence, despotism and suppression.

They asked: Why are Muslims so violent? How can Islam justify the terrorism of al- Qaeda or the Palestinian suicide bombers? Why do Muslims ignore human and women's rights? Have Muslims declared jihad (righteous struggle) against 'Western infidels'? But Muslims see Islam as about peace and justice.

So what is 'real Islam'? Sardar and Davies explain the concepts and the rich history of the Muslim world. But they also call for urgent reforms within Islam, and for the West to end its bigotry.

The No-Nonsense Guide to World Poverty

Jeremy Seabrook summarizes his celebrated work on the meaning of poverty, drawing on the experience of poor people themselves in both rich and poor societies. He concludes that the opposite of poverty is not wealth but 'sufficiency'. The relatively poor majority of the world's people do not aim to be rich, but to be safe. Economic growth will never overcome the problems it is largely responsible for creating.

The Transition Handbook: from oil dependency to local resilience

by Rob Hopkins

We live in an oil-dependent world, and have got to this level of dependency in a very short space of time, using vast reserves of oil in the process – without planning for when the supply is not so plentiful. Most of us avoid thinking about what happens when oil runs out (or becomes prohibitively expensive), but The Transition Handbook shows how the inevitable and profound changes ahead can have a positive outcome. These changes can lead to the rebirth of local communities, which will grow more of their own food, generate their own power, and build their own houses using local materials. They can also encourage the development of local currencies, to keep money in the local area.

There are now over 40 Transition Towns in the New Zealand, with more joining as the idea takes off. With little proactivity at government level, communities are taking matters into their own hands and acting locally. If your town is not a Transition Town, this upbeat guide offers you the tools for starting the process. It is a process which is, as Richard Heinberg writes in his Foreword, “more like a party than a protest march”.

The Hikoi of Hope: Walking On

A new resource for liturgical, group and individual use, this DVD is packed with video clips, documentary, music, bible studies, slideshows and activities.

As part of our year of looking back and walking on, we have produced what we hope will be the first of a couple of DVDs. This one looks back, and encourages us to reflect upon where we are at and how we may walk. It's reflective, it's engaging, and it's practical.

Living with poverty?

During Lent, Dunedin resident Jolyon White lived rough on the equivalent of US$1 a day. He recorded his journey to the margins of society on video.

We are working with Jolyon to produce a documentary and teaching resource which will not only shed light on global poverty through his personal encounter, but also allow expose the face of poverty in New Zealand, and prompt our engagement locally.

We are currently looking for funding for this project. Please think about how you may be able to contribute.

Imagine what it would be like if there was real investment in social transformation at the grassroots. The kind of radical green transformative edge that normal funding bodies don't get too excited about.

Well, we are going to hit the road and connect resource people with local communities, and resource local engagement in the pursuit of justice. In the process, we're going to gather stories to share with the rest of Aotearoa, New Zealand and Polynesia, so that we may walk justly together.

This costs money, of course. It also requires people. If you can make a contribution of either, let us know. Kia kaha.

Karl Barth 1962 A

In 1962, Karl Barth made his one and only trip to the USA. He spoke at Chicago University, responding to questions from a panel of young theologians - including Hans Frei, Shubert Ogden, and William Stringfellow (the only non-academic present).

Barth outlines his understanding of both Romans 13 and the principalities and powers.

It was during this address, and later in time spent together, that Barth and Stringfellow identified a common bond. In the recording you will hear Barth's famous "listen to this man" etc. (pointing at Stringfellow at the time).

But note also Barth naming he would write a theology of freedom if he were an American. It is this theology of freedom, arguably, Stringfellow went on to write.

It's an inspiring commentary, relevant today as it was then (which I always find disturbing).

Do it Yourself: A handbook for changing our world

Climate change, resource wars, privatisation, the growing gap between rich and poor, politicians that don't listen...

Massive issues, but how can we make any difference? Do It Yourself: A Handbook for Changing Our World shows how. It's not a book about what's wrong with the world, but a collection of dynamic ideas which explore how we can build radical and meaningful social change, ourselves here and now.

The book weaves together analysis, stories and experiences. It combines in-depth analytical chapters followed by easy to follow 'How to Guides' with practical ideas for change. Taken together, these small steps can move us towards taking back control of our lives from governments and corporations.

Upside Down World Jigsaw Puzzle

The world upside down, and in 500 pieces!

This great jigsaw is based on the Hobo Dyer equal Area Projection, but flipped – so not only does it have countries represented in the correct size in relation to one another, it’s turned our normal perception of up and down on its head.

How does such a simple thing as reversing the poles influence your impression of what is important? This map’s a great way to shake people up and help them question their assumptions, and it’s even more fun and challenging when you have to put it together as a jigsaw!
