“For The Bible Tells Me So” screening

By / 16 September 2008

A public screening of a new documentary ‘For The Bible Tells Me So’ followed by a panel discussion on the division in churches over homosexuality and the impact on families in Aotearoa

  • Dr Mark Henrickson Lavender Islands study of lesbian, gay and bisexual New Zealanders
  • Elizabeth Kerekere Out There! Queer Youth Development Project
  • Rev. Fraser Paterson Presbyterian Minister

At a time when the issue of homosexuality is polarising the Church on an unprecedented scale, this compassionate and insightful new documentary focuses on some of those caught in the crossfire. Through the experiences of five Christian families we discover how insightful people of faith handle the realization of having a gay child.

Informed by such respected voices as Bishop Desmond Tutu, the film also provides a useful deconstruction of the arguments used to justify homophobia by the church, and explains the cultural and historical context of the biblical verses that are frequently misinterpreted as condemning homosexuality.

About us

This site is run by the Social Justice Commission of the Anglican Church.

We seek to nurture justice spirituality and imagination, and engage in advocacy in all areas of life, overcoming poverty and transforming violence.

We encourage people to think and live “justly”, and emphasise debate and action on local, national and global issues.

Although we are Anglican, our vision isn’t so much about being Anglican. It’s about living justly. Justice is about how you live your life, and being just where we are. Working together, we can all flourish.
