Helen Clark was right.*

By Aidan / 7 November 2008

… We are a secular nation.

As I write, the Boobs on Bikes parade is going down Lambton Quay, to the delight of crowds outside. A friend’s txt said, “Lambton Quay’s more crowded than a santa parade!”

And yet – there is no protest. No Christians marching up to their MPs. No religious leaders standing out decrying this very visible godless parade.

New Zealand – meet Apathy – oh! Sorry! You’re already well-acquainted.

* Her 2002 quote - at a state banquet for the Queen - that New Zealand is now a secular nation has been disputed elsewhere.

About us

This site is run by the Social Justice Commission of the Anglican Church.

We seek to nurture justice spirituality and imagination, and engage in advocacy in all areas of life, overcoming poverty and transforming violence.

We encourage people to think and live “justly”, and emphasise debate and action on local, national and global issues.

Although we are Anglican, our vision isn’t so much about being Anglican. It’s about living justly. Justice is about how you live your life, and being just where we are. Working together, we can all flourish.
