Sustainable Dunedin Parishes.

By Jolyon / 3 April 2007

St John’s and St Mary’s parishes in Dunedin have formed a combined environmental group. The original idea was to discuss ways in which the churches could become carbon neutral. However, it was decided that carbon neutrality was only one aspect of the churches responsibility towards creation. The bigger picture of sustainable church life is the group’s primary focus. After the first meeting a target of one month was set to attempt to find an environmental audit tool for the church buildings and programmes, and another take home audit tool (survey style) to assess the footprint of the lives of individual church members. I am aware that a number of other churches around the country have begun a similar journey. I hope this post will be a way for the members of the Dunedin group to stay in communication with progress and ideas, but also a place where other groups with a similar vision might comment with advice and support. We are in no hurry to reinvent ideas and work that others have already attempted.

I am currently particularly interested in how to include food miles or local produce purchace issues into the audit.

About us

This site is run by the Social Justice Commission of the Anglican Church.

We seek to nurture justice spirituality and imagination, and engage in advocacy in all areas of life, overcoming poverty and transforming violence.

We encourage people to think and live “justly”, and emphasise debate and action on local, national and global issues.

Although we are Anglican, our vision isn’t so much about being Anglican. It’s about living justly. Justice is about how you live your life, and being just where we are. Working together, we can all flourish.
