The happiest kiwis are Americans…but is it all a storm in a teacup?

By Ant / 16 June 2008

As we all now know, Labour says it used American models to illustrate a taxpayer-funded advertisement promoting t

he Budget because it could not find a Kiwi family at a reasonable cost.

The Prime Minister dismissed the fact that her office effectively passed off these models as New Zealanders as “a storm in a teacup”.

The pamphlet, promoting last month’s Budget and paid for from Labour’s leader’s budget, promises “a fair economy for a strong future” for New Zealand families.

It has also been revealed that the same picture is being used by Australia’s Labor government to promote its affordable-housing policy.

The question is, what do you think – is this a storm in a teacup? Should we have had a kiwi family not matter what the cost? Does it show a government losing touch? Or does it suggest good fiscal responsible practice – after all, it’s just an illustration, isn’t it?

About us

This site is run by the Social Justice Commission of the Anglican Church.

We seek to nurture justice spirituality and imagination, and engage in advocacy in all areas of life, overcoming poverty and transforming violence.

We encourage people to think and live “justly”, and emphasise debate and action on local, national and global issues.

Although we are Anglican, our vision isn’t so much about being Anglican. It’s about living justly. Justice is about how you live your life, and being just where we are. Working together, we can all flourish.
